    Term 3 Week 5

In English, we are going turn our attention to the London Frost Fairs that took place in the time of Samuel Pepys. We will use both primary and secondary sources of information to learn about Frost Fairs and take part in a live English lesson. We will then use this understanding to help us write another diary entry from the point of view of Samuel Pepys.

In Maths, we are going to continue to work on divsion. We will fine tune our work on grouping and then focus on selecting the most efficient method of division.

We will also continue to provide R.E., P.E., History, Design and Art and Outdoor Learning sessions as well.

    Reading-

Remember to read for at least 20 minutes at home today. We have also added a reading comprehension activity for you to complete all about pirates. Remember to pick a level of challenge that suits you.

    Writing-

If you haven’t done so already, complete the narrative writing activity from Friday.

Now, we would like you to extend your narrative by continuing the conversation between the two characters. Think carefully about what they might say next to each other and add it to your writing using the rules of speech punctuation that we learned on Friday. Then finish off your writing with an action sentence that shows what the characters did next.

When your writing is complete, send it in so we can give you feedback and post your work on the blog.

    Maths-

For Monday and Tuesday we want you complete the following worksheets. You don’t have to do them all in one go.

Here are the links to the videos that you can watch to help:

-Divide by 2: Spr2.4.1 - Divide by 2 on Vimeo

-Divide by 5: Spr2.4.3 - Divide by 5 on Vimeo

-Divided by 10: Spr2.4.4 - Divide by 10 on Vimeo

    Number Fluency-

You have done such a great job learning your 2, 5 and 10 times tables. Well done! Now we are going to start thinking about the 3 times table. First of all, we would like you to watch Mr M’s learning video:

    https://youtu.be/UY1czdWDCvM

Now practise your skip counting in multiples of 3.

    Let's Party!

Today is Mrs J's birthday and she would really like everyone in Beech Class to celebrate with her.

At school we are going to be making cupcakes and she would love you to do the same. Have a look at the recipe that we've attached to the blog. You might even have your own favourite cake recipe?

She would love to see your birthday cupcakes so remember to send us in some photos.

Don't forget to share them with your family!

We are also going to go on a cosmic yoga adventure based on one of her favourite films, Star Wars.

  • Friday Challenge!

    Published 30/01/21, by Charlie Mackinnon

I was reading the news this week when I saw an article about the professional tennis player, Edouard Roger-Vasselin. He is currently isolating before the start of the Australian Open Tennis Tournament. While he was stuck in his hotel room, he created this chain reaction machine:

Edouard Roger-Vasselin's Covid quarantine chain reaction machine - YouTube

Can you create a chain reaction machine at home?

If you have dominoes you could set up a Domino Rally.

If you don’t have dominoes, could you use other objects that bump and move each other.

How many objects can you involve?

When your chain reaction machine is complete, please take a photo of it or video of it in action and send it in to your class email address so we can give you feedback and post your work on the blog.

We will also pick out some winning entries in celebration assembly next week!

    Reading-

Remember to read at home today for at least 20 minutes. You can also tune in to Mr M reading the next chapter of The Witches.

    https://youtu.be/dDB4c0OBV9E

    Writing-

Today we are going to explore how direct speech is recorded in narrative writing. The first thing that we  need to think about are the rules for speech punctuation. Watch Mr M’s learning video in which he introduces these rules and models how to turn a cartoon into a piece of third person narrative.

    https://youtu.be/H9P6IZ5LQAo

Now try turning your cartoon into a piece of narrative. If you have not completed a cartoon but would still like to complete this activity, you can use Mr M’s version which is attached to this blog post.

    Maths-

Watch Mr M’s video in which he models how to use grouping to solve division problems.

    https://youtu.be/QLCY22qG_l0

Now use the techniques modelled in the learning video to solve these division problems with large dividends.

    EXTENSION: Consider the following statement:

All of the problems in today’s lesson had large dividends. Why is grouping an efficient method for problems with low dividends? Why is sharing not a very efficient method for these types of problems?

If you want to share your ideas, or find out what Mr M thinks, contact us via the class email address.

    Number Fluency-

Try the 10 times tables worksheet and watch the video if you need help.

    Art and Design-

Today we are going to experiment with drawing and composition. Here are the resources you will need:

    -plain white paper

    -oil pastels or charcoal,

    -wax crayons,

    -pencil

    -crayons

    -paper clip

Today we are going to experiment with a technique called Sgraffito. This means to scratch away at the top layer to reveal a light contrasting layer underneath.

Here is a video which explains how to xgraffito with oil pastels to create texture and  decoration

    https://youtu.be/QHRgNy-Us9E "

Firstly colour a small area of your paper with a light colour. Then use a darker colour to colour over the top. Take your paper clip and bend, so you can use the end to scratch into the colour, revealing the lighter colour underneath. The paper clip can be used to create pictures in your coloured area. Experiment with different contrasting colours. The youtube link will give you detailed instruction and shows an inspiring end piece or art.

Another idea could be to fold an A4 piece of paper into 4, then unfold to reveal separating lines and create a picture storyboard. Each quarter would contain a Sgraffito picture as a different section of the story.

We are looking forward to seeing your Sgraffito designs so please send them in to us!

As always, if you have any questions or need help with any of the work you have been set, please do not hesitate to contact us.
