  • Year 2 Summer Challenge- Reading

    Published 19/07/21, by Charlie Mackinnon

Sign up for this year’s Tunbridge Wells Library Summer Reading Challenge.

Children can join at any currently open library in the district (Cranbrook, Showfields and Southborough) or online at:

    www.summerreadingchallenge.org.uk

Also, your teachers have set you 10 St Barnabas Reading Challenges to complete over the Summer Holidays.

    • Challenge 1: Dress Up

Dress up like a character from a favourite story. What can you find around the house to help make your costume? Get in to character and act out part of the story. Try to keep the story going and make up your own parts of the story for the characters that you are playing.

    • Challenge 2: Retell It

Pick a story that you know really well. Learn the main parts of the story so that you are able to retell it in your own words.

    • Challenge 3: Change a Character

Pick a story that you know really well. Change one of the characters to turn it in to a new story. For example, you could take The Tiger that Came to Tea and turn it in to The Spider That Came for Supper.

    • Challenge 4: Change the Ending

Pick a story that you know really well. Change the ending to turn it in to a new story. For example, you could take We’re Going on a Bear Hunt and make it so they invite the bear in at the end.

    • Challenge 5: Get Creative

Get inspired by a book you have read. Create a drawing, sculpture or piece of artwork inspired by your book.

    • Challenge 6: Compare It

Find a well-loved story that has recently been turned into a T.V. programme. The Gruffalo, Zog, The Snail and the Whale, We’re Going on a Bear Hunt or The Tiger that Came to Tea. Read the book and watch the T.V episode. How were they similar? How were they different? Which did you prefer? Why?

    • Challenge 7: Write to a Character

Pick a favourite character form a familiar story. Write to them. You could write a formal letter, a note to pass under their door, an email or even a text/WhatsApp message. It is up to you. Imagine that they received you message. What do you think they would write back?

    • Challenge 8: Turn it into a Comic

Pick a story that you know really well. Draw pictures and use speech bubbled and captions to turn it into a comic strip.

    • Challenge 9: Take it Outside

Pick a book that you love. Pick a setting from the book and take it to a real life location to read. For example, take The Gruffalo to a deep dark wood or The Snail and the Whale to the seaside.

    • Challenge 10: Make a Book Nook

Make a special place in your house to read. Make it a cosy and snug space place to read on your own or with an adult.

If you manage to complete any of these challenges and would like to share them with us, send your pictures or work in to the Summer Challenge email address:

    Term 6 Week 7

We can’t believe that this is our last week in Year 2! It has been such a wonderful year and we have some fantastic activities planned for our final week as a class.

We have got some wonderful art projects planned that link in with our ‘At Home and Abroad’ topic. We are going to design blue and white ceramic tiles which can be copied and laid in groups of 6. We are going to sketch traditional Vietnamese scenes using pencil. We are going to head into the school garden, whittle twigs, light fires and make our own charcoal. Finally, we are going to use this home-made charcoal to add detail and shading to our Vietnamese sketches.

We will also find time to have a small in-class celebration and we will even make some homemade popcorn and watch Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

What an exciting final week of Year 2!

P.S. Don’t forget to join us for the PTFA Picnics in the Park event on Wednesday at 4:30!

    Term 6 Week 6

This week, we are going to write a recount of our fantastic trip to the park. We have already planned out our writing using subheadings, pictures and adverbial phrases. We will now use this plan to create a complete piece of writing. If you are interested in finding our more about the specific skills we are using, please look at the colour coded success criteria in this week’s English Home Learning.

In Maths, we are going to continue to explore measurement.

In Science, we are going to further develop our understanding of food chains, food webs and the interdependence of living things living in the same habitat. We will also explore how we can use a Yes/No diagram to categorise animals that live in our local woodland habitat.

We will also complete P.E., R.E., and Art and Design activities.

    Term 6 Week 3

In the week beginning 28th June, Year 2 pupils will complete their end of Key Stage 1 SATs. While these assessments are not being administered across the country as they would be under normal circumstances, we have decided that we are still going to administer them in Year 2 this year.

Therefore, we will spend some time this week ensuring that pupils are familiar with the test papers so they know exactly what to expect next week.

If you have any questions or queries, please do not hesitate to contact us via the class email address.

In English this week, we are going to complete one final piece of narrative writing. We are going to create a storyboard and a shared piece of writing. Next, pupils will use all the narrative writing skills we have focussed on this term to create their own piece of narrative writing. In Maths, we will complete our final preparations for our Year 2 SATs. We will focus on solving division and fractions problems in both arithmetic and reasoning contexts.

In Science, we will turn our attention towards green plants. We will learn to name the different parts of plants and explore what plants need to grow successfully.

We will also complete R.E, P.E, and Design and Art activities.
