    Term 1 Week 4

In English this week we are going to focus on using conjunctions to create compound and complex sentences. We will take some of the simple sentences that we created last week and consider how the and/but/so/because conjunctions can be used to add additional clauses in order to add detail to these sentences. Next, we will use these skills to write short paragraphs detailing the events of parts of the ‘Quest’ narrative.

In Maths, we are going to focus on using and applying our understanding of place value to solve problems involving the <> and = symbols. Next, we are going to use our understanding to solve a series of reasoning problems.

In Science and Computing, we are going to explore the role that Information Technology plays at school and indeed in the wider world.

In R.E. we will continue to focus on Creation and in P.E. we will continue to develop our Gymnastics and Football skills.

In Design and the Arts, we will continue to work with clay to create sculptural forms.

If you have any questions or would like more information about any of the activities that we have detailed in this post, please do not hesitate to contact us via the class email address: beech@st-barnabas.kent.sch.uk

    Term 1 Week 3

This week we have two spelling/phonics activities to complete:

    1) Use the attached sheet to practise reading and spelling the Phase 3 Tricky words. You can then test yourself using the Look, Say, Cover, Write, Check approach.

    2) Use the attached sheet to revise and practise your Phase 3 Sounds. Use these sounds to come up with some potential names for Mr M's pet alien.

    See the source image

For example, I could use the sounds 'v' 'igh' and 'zz' to make the alien name Vighzz. Please email in your favourite alien names using the class email address: beech@st-barnabas.kent.sch.uk

    Term 1 Week 3

In English this week we are focusing on creating sentences to describe the actions of characters from Aaron Becker’s Quest. First, we are going to generate actors and actions and create simple sentences. Next, we are going to explore how we can use adverbial phrases to add detail to these sentences.

In Maths, we are going to continue to expand our understanding of place value. We are going to explore how partitioning can be used in different ways and how we can use addition and subtraction calculations to record our thinking. Finally, we are going to think about how we can use the < > and = symbols to compare 1 and 2-digit numbers.

In Science and Computing we are going to by exploring and using the main parts of a computer. In P.E. we are going to develop our football and gymnastic skills. We will also complete R.E and Design and the Arts lessons as well.

We are also hosting a ‘Meet the Teacher’ event on Wednesday 22nd September at 3:05pm. We would love to see as many families as possible on Wednesday so we can meet properly and talk about what learning will look like in beech Class this year.

    Term 1 Week 2

This week we are going to focus on the book Quest by Aaron Becker. We are going to use this image as inspiration to create some pieces of descriptive writing.

First, we are going to use the interesting noun phrases that we collected last week and generate a series of adjectives to help describe them. Next, we are going to use sentence starters and join them with the adjectives and noun phrases to create some descriptive sentences. Finally, we are going to create some interesting exclamation and question sentences to finish our writing.

In Maths, we are going to focus on the Place Value of 2-digit numbers. We are going to begin by completing two place value investigations- one using place value cards and the other using dines blocks. The focus of both investigations will be to develop our understanding of place value and utilise systematic methods of working.

In Science and Computing we are going to continue to recognise different types of Information Technology and explain how it can be used and applied in our everyday lives.

In P.E. we are going to design and practise gymnastic routines exploring the way in which can change the speed, level and shape of our movements. We are also going to be setting personal targets and then practising to see if we can beat our own personal bests in a range of different key skills.

We will also complete R.E and Art and Design lessons as well.

As always, if you would like to know more about any of these learning activities or you have any questions relating to your child’s learning, please do not hesitate to contact us via the class email address: beech@st-barnabas.kent.sch.uk

    Term 1 Week 1

In English this week we will start by writing a set of class rules. We will mind-map the types of behaviour that we would like to see from Beech pupils this year. We will then learn about what we need to include to make grammatically sound sentences. Next, we will use and apply this understanding to create our class rules for the year. Finally, we will turn our attention towards the book ‘Quest’ by Aaron Becker. We will familiarise ourselves with the book, develop our prediction, inference and deduction skills and then turn our attention towards using the book as inspiration for our own written descriptions. We will also read a number of other books selected to engage and inspire the class including The Tin Forest by Helen Ward.

In Maths this week, we will focus on revisiting the concept of place value for the numbers 0-20. We will represent these numbers in a variety of different ways including numerals. words, numicon, counters and number-lines. Next, we will extend this understanding to the numbers from 1 to 50 with a focus on number lines and number tracks.

In R.E. we will explore the concept of creation and begin to explore the Christian story of creation. In Science and Computing, we will explore and recognise the uses and features of information technology in the world around us.

We will also complete P.E and Design and the Arts lessons as well.

If you have any questions relating to the information in this blog or indeed any mater relating to your child’s learning, please do not hesitate to contact us via the class email address: beech@st-barnabas.kent.sch.uk
