    Term 3 Welcome back

Welcome back! We hope you had a great Christmas break.

This week, we are going to start our new Knights and Castles Enquiry. We will begin by placing the time in which Knights were commonplace in Britain into chronological context by using a walking time-line. If you want to complete this walking timeline activity at home, please contact us via the class email address and we will send you the instructions. Next, we will use a range of secondary sources of information to research and find out about Knights and Castles. Finally, we will begin to explore the fiction surrounding Knights and Castles and begin to develop strategies for separating fact from fiction.

If you would like to get a head start with your Knights and Castles learning, why not follow these links and watch these videos?

Castles and Knights: The Legend of King Arthur - BBC Teach

This interactive activity is also full of useful Knights and Castles information:

In Maths, we are going to turn our attention towards money. We are going to compare and sequence amounts of money and line these values to amounts of base ten equipment. Next, we are going to practise counting in 2s, 5s and 10s and then explore how these skills can be used to solve problems involving money.

If you would like to get a head start with this learning, why not practise your counting in 2s, 5s and 10s skills at home?

In Science and Computing, we will focus on using Venn Sorting Diagrams to sort materials according to two separate criteria.

We will also complete Guided Reading, Spelling, Design and the Arts and PE activities.

If you would like to know more about any of these activities or you need learning to complete at home due to a period of self-isolation, please do not hesitate to contact us via the class email address: beech@st-barnabas.kent.sch.uk

    Term 2 Week 6

This week, all Year 2 pupils will complete their Key Stage 1 phonics screening. This normally happens towards the end of Year 1 but was delayed this year due to COVID. The screening only takes a few minutes and is completed by a familiar adult. If you have any questions or queries about the Phonics screening please do not hesitate to get in touch.

In English this week, we are going to focus on adding detail to our most recent pieces of diary writing. We are going to focus on adding sentences that describe what Samuel Pepys could see, hear and smell while at the Frost Fair and also how he felt. The week will culminate with Beech Class walking down to the Calverly Grounds to visit a modern-day Frost Fair. We will take time to record the sights sounds and feelings we experience during this trip and feed them forward into our first piece of writing in January.

In Maths this week, we are going to continue our focus on addition and subtraction. We are going to explore how number-lines can be useful tools when adding and subtraction 2-digit numbers.

In Science and Computing, we are going to focus on sorting materials according to 1 and then 2 separate criteria.

We will also complete RE, PE and Design and the Arts lessons.

As you can imagine, we will also spend time practising and rehearsing our Key Stage 1 Nativity ready for our performances next week.

What a busy week it is!

    Term 2 Week 5

In English this we, we are turning our attention to a new part of our Fire and Ice topic. We are going to start learning about the Thames frost fairs. First, we will use primary sources of information to research the frost fairs. Next, we will use our understanding of sentence construction to write simple action sentences describing the events of these fairs. Finally, we will explore how we can use prepositional phrases and conjunctions to add detail and interest to our sentences.

In Maths this week, we will continue to focus on subtraction. First, we will complete our learning on the expanded vertical method of subtraction. Next, we will explore how our existing understanding of adding and subtracting 10 can be used to solve subtraction problems. Finally, we will explore how a blank number-line can be used to record our thinking when solving these sorts of problems.

In Science, we will begin studying materials. We will explore different material properties and use Venn Diagrams to sort objects according to 1 and then 2 separate criteria.

Next week, we will start our Zippy’s Friends programme. We will explain to the class that we will be using the stories of Zippy and his friends to understand a lot of things that happen in our lives, and we will introduce the characters from the story. We will also talk to them about the rules for the group and discuss why each one is important. We will read a bit of the story and use what happens in it to discuss times when we were happy or sad. We will then look at what we can do when we are sad, who we can talk to and how we can make ourselves feel less sad. We will talk about possible solutions and discuss the idea that a good solution is something that helps us feel better and doesn’t hurt us or anyone else.

We will also complete PE, RE and Design and Art activities as well as rehearsing for the KS1 nativity.

If you have any questions about our learning, please do not hesitate to contact us using the class email address: beech@st-barnabas.kent.sch.uk

    Term 2 Week 4

This week we are going to finish our versions of Samuel Pepys’ diary. We are going to consider interesting ways to end our writing, such as exclamation sentences, questions and responses. We will then set about transcribing a best copy of our writing to go into our topic books and be displayed around the school.

In Maths we are going to turn our attention towards subtracting 2-digit from 2-digit numbers. We are going to explore the extent to which the expanded vertical method that we used last week can be applied to subtraction.

We will also complete RE, Design and Art and PE lessons.

Finally, we will start to rehearse our Nativity performance.

If you have any questions or queries about our learning, please do not hesitate to contact us via the class email address: beech@st-barnabas.kent.sch.uk
