    Term 4 Week 4

In English this week, we have been creating a character description for the dragon from our Class Quest. We are going to use a range of techniques to help describe the dragon including adjectives, similes and adverbial phrases. We are also going to collect useful words and phrases from our reading to describe the dragon in even more detail.

In Maths, we are focusing on money. We are going to focus on selecting the coins and notes required to make specific amounts. Next we are going to explore how to find different ways to make the same amount. Then we are going to use our understanding of addition to find total amounts of money. We will also make sure that we use and apply all of this understanding to solve problems.

In Science and Computing, we are focusing on data collection and presentation. We will start by exploring tally charts and pictograms. Then, we will explore how we can use computer software to create our own pictograms.

We will also complete Spelling, Guided Reading, PE, RE and Design and the Arts activities as well.

As always, if you have any questions or queries relating to these activities, please do not hesitate to get in touch via the class email address.

    Term 4 Week 2

I have attached a list of some of the tricky words that we have been focusing on over this year. The words at the start of the list are those that we have given out in previous week's spelling home learning. The words at the end of the list are new.

Step 1: Read the list and make sure you can fluently read these words. Remember, they are tricky words so we don't want to be using our phonics skills to read them.

Step 2: Underline any words which you struggled to read. Write them on flashcards and put them up in your room. Try and read them every time you see them.

Step 3: Take the first 10 words on the list.

    the

    a

    are

    is

    I

    he

    she

    we

    my

    do

How many of these can you spell accurately? Get a member of your family to test you.

Step 4: Make a list of the words which you struggled to spell. Practise spelling them regularly using the Read, Say, Cover, Write, Check technique.

Step 5: When you are ready, move on to the next 10 spellings.

EXTENSION: If you are looking for an extra challenge, can you use 1, 2 or even 3 of these words in a fully punctuated sentence?

    Term 4 Week 3

In English this week we are going to continue and complete the character descriptions for the hero of our quest- Sir Fred. We are going to explore how we can show our audience what type of character he is by detailing his actions. We are also going to use similes, adverbial phrases and adjectives to create descriptive sentences. Finally, we are going to create exclamation sentences to complete our descriptions.

In Maths we are going to focus on money. We are going to revisit our previous learning on identifying and ordering coins and notes according to their value. Next, we are going to use and apply our counting and arithmetic skills to total values of money. Finally, we are going to use and apply these skills to solve some problems.

In Science and Computing we are going to turn our attention to data handling and presentation. We will start by exploring the use of tally charts to efficiently and reliably collect and record data.

We will also complete spelling, guided reading, PE, RE, PHSCE and Design and the Arts lessons as well.

As always, if you would like to know more about any of these activities, please do not hesitate to contact us directly using the class email address.

    Term 4 Week 2

In English this week, we are going to finish our pieces of information writing which explain the events surrounding the battle for the English Crown in 1066. We will focus on using sequencing vocabulary, directional vocabulary and historical vocabulary to produce accurate and precise pieces of information writing. Next, we will turn our attention to narrative writing. We will use the kingdom and quest that we have already created as the basis for our writing. We will begin by creating a character description for our hero- Sir Fred.

In Maths, we will begin by completing a reasoning activity all about multiplication. We will investigate whether swapping the factors around in a multiplication calculation affects the product. Next, we will use the multiplication and division skills that we have learned over the last few weeks to become fluent at solving both arithmetic and reasoning problems.

In Science and Computing, we will use the best digital photograph that we took last week and explore how we can use photo-editing software to make it even better.

We will also complete guided reading, spelling, number-fluency, Zippy’s Friends, PE, RE and Design and the Arts lessons.

If you would like to know more about any activity that we have covered this week, please do not hesitate to contact us directly via the class email address.

    Term 4 Week 1

This week we are turning our attention towards the Time and Place element of the Year 2 curriculum. First, we are going to explore maps of Europe and locate Britain. Next, we are going to explore the concepts of invasion and settlement. We will create class definitions of these key historical terms and use sorting and discussion activities to deepen our understanding of these concepts. Next, we will explore the Norman invasion and the battle for the crown of England in 1066. We will explore the motivations of movements of the three main claimants for the throne and use historical and directional vocabulary to explain these events.

In Maths, we will revisit the grouping and sharing techniques that we learned in order to complete division problems. We will explore the concept of efficiency and make generalisations about which technique is more efficient for different types of division problems. We will also revisit the various techniques we learned to complete multiplication problems. Finally, we will use and apply all of these skills to solve arithmetic and reasoning problems for multiplication and division.

In Science and Computing we will complete a dissolving investigation to make discoveries which will help Sir Fred on his quest.

We will also complete Guiding Reading, Spelling, Number Fluency, RE, PE and Design and the Arts lessons.

If you would like to know more about any of these activities, please do not hesitate to contact us via the class email address.

    Term 3 Week 5

In English this week we are going to continue to focus on instruction writing. We are going to turn our attention to the part of our story where Sir Fred defeats the dragon. First, we will focus on creating an introduction and a ‘You Will Need’ section. Next, we will focus on creating detailed instructions which include sequencing vocabulary, adverbial phrases, imperative verbs and conjunctions. Finally, we will create a short conclusion to complete our instructions.

In Maths we will focus our attention on division. We will introduce pupils to the ÷ symbol and explore two different methods of solving division problems; grouping and sharing. We will use manipulatives to represent these two methods before teaching pupils how to use more efficient ways of recording their thinking. Finally, we will use and apply this understanding to solve arithmetic and reasoning problems involving division.

In Science and Computing we will continue to focus on Digital Photography. We are going to focus on what constitutes a good photograph and the role that lighting plays.

We will also complete Spelling, Handwriting, Guided Reading, Number Fluency, PE, Design and the Arts, and RE activities as well. If you would like to find out more about any of these activities, please do not hesitate to contact us directly.
