2026/27 Term 1

Welcome to Year 1!  Each week we will post a learning update on the Year 1 Blog. This will keep you updated on your child’s main learning activities for the upcoming week. Here is an overview of our learning activities for Thursday 3rd September to Friday 4th September 2026.

The Willow Class adults are looking forward to meeting our new class and hearing all about their adventures over the summer holidays. This week we will be settling the children back into school and talking about the routines and class rules in Year 1.

Our English and Topic focus for the start of this term is the book ‘Something Else’ by Kathryn Cave and illustrated by Chris Riddell. This is a picture story book about a small creature that does his best to join in with the others, even though he is different to them. We will be starting to read the book and discuss the story over the next week.

As a school we follow the Twinkl Phonics Scheme. This week and next week we will be revisiting some of the phonemes that the children learnt in Acorn class and checking which letter sounds the children can remember.

Our first Maths topic this term focuses on the numbers from 0 to 10. This week and next week we will be sorting objects into groups using different criteria, starting to count groups of objects and will be writing some numbers to 10.

Willow Class will have PE on Tuesday afternoon and Thursday morning this term. Please make sure that your child has their full PE kit in school on these days.

We will start to send out reading books from Friday this week. Ideally, all children in Year 1 should be reading at home for at least 10 minutes each day. Please record details of any reading your child does with you at home in their reading record book and let us know when you have finished a book by writing that in the reading record as well.  We kindly request that book bags and reading records are brought in to school every day, particularly for the next few weeks.

If you have any questions or need help with anything, please contact us using the class email address (willow@st-barnabas.kent.sch.uk).

Best wishes,

Mrs Pring and the Year 1 Team
