Term 1 Week 6

Our learning from Term 1 Week 6

This week in phonics, we have been busy learning two new sounds — ‘a’ and ‘t’! The children practised saying the sounds correctly, thought of objects that start with each sound, and had a go at writing them on their whiteboards. Everyone is working so hard on their letter formation and beginning to recognise sounds in words.

In maths, we have been exploring how numbers are made. We discovered that 2 is made of 1 and 1, that a collection of 3 can be made up of 3 separate objects, and that 4 is made of 4 ones. The children also worked on creating their own sorting rules, noticing similarities and differences between different sets of objects.

In Understanding the World, we have been learning about our bodies. We sang “Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes” and looked at the different features that make up the human body. We then labelled body parts together and added them to our working wall — it looks fantastic!

In Art, we discussed how we are all different and special in our own way. The children looked carefully at their faces in mirrors before drawing and painting their wonderful self-portraits.

In PE, the children worked hard on following instructions and keeping safe while moving around the hall. We practised leaving a gap between ourselves and the next person as we moved along a path. Later, the children had a go at an obstacle course, carefully travelling around the equipment while remembering our safety rules.

In RE, we talked about why God is special and precious to Christians. We discussed how we should use God’s name with care and respect. We looked at something precious — Miss Burkinshaw’s ring — and talked about how it needs to be looked after gently, just like we treat God’s name with care. The children also thought about what is precious to them and why.

We ended the week with a very special event — our Harvest Festival! The children did an amazing job walking to church with the help of their Year 6 buddies and listened beautifully during the service. We are so proud of them all!

Star of the week: Congratulations to King, who is our star of the week, for having a positive week and doing a fantastic job of controlling his emotions. King will be taking home his certificate and Wilfred the Elephant to write in the book all about his time spent with Wilfred over the next week and will bring him back next Thursday.

Please remember to read with your child, even for just 5 minutes! Please also remember to record it in the reading record. We will only change your child's book if you have read with them 2 or more times in that week! Reading books are changed on Tuesday's and Thursday's. Please remember to have the library book in your children's book bag on Thursday to be changed.

Any issues or concerns we need to know about, please speak to the Acorn team before and after school or email at: acorn@st-barnabas.kent.sch.uk
