Term 6 Week 5

Our learning from Term 6 Week 5

This week has been another busy and exciting one in Reception!

Phonics

We have been practising our Level 2 and 3 sounds, focusing on blending and segmenting words carefully. The children have worked so hard to identify and use the correct sounds, and it’s been lovely to see their confidence growing each day.

Maths

In maths, we have been counting numbers beyond 20 and exploring different strategies to make sure every number is counted. We’ve also been recapping learning about equivalence and investigating doubles using our fingers. The children enjoyed sorting collections of objects into equal and unequal groups and deciding if numbers to 10 were doubles or not.

Sports Day!

One of the highlights of our week was our Sports Day! A huge thank you to all the parents who came to support us – it made the morning even more special. The children did a fantastic job taking part in their races and activities, and it was wonderful to see their enthusiasm and teamwork.

Drawing Club

In Drawing Club, we explored the book Manfish. The children discussed four new vocabulary words: float, dive, explore and fins, thinking about what each word means. They then created some fantastic drawings:

  • Jacques as a boy dreaming of swimming underwater with fish, alongside writing about what they themselves would like to explore under the sea.
  • Jacques diving underwater in his suit and flippers, and writing about what he might see.
  • Themselves as part child, part sea creature exploring the ocean, and writing about what sea creature they would be!

RE

In RE, we continued learning about the Old Testament story of Joseph and how his gift from God was understanding dreams. The children shared some of their own dreams and talked about how Christians believe God gives lots of different gifts to people, such as kindness, creativity or dancing.

Expressive Art and Design

In art, we carried on learning about the layers of the ocean. The children painted each layer and then added pictures of sea creatures to show where they live. It was fantastic to see how carefully they worked and how much they remembered about each layer!

Star of the week: Congratulations to Noah A and Peggy, who are our stars of the week. Noah is our star of the week for his outstanding writing of sentences in Drawing Club and Peggy is another of our stars of the week for demonstrating amazing progress in her writing during Phonics and drawing club. Noah and Peggy will be taking home their certificates this week.

Please remember to read with your child, even for just 5 minutes! Please also remember to record it in the reading record. We will only change your child's book if you have read with them 2 or more times in that week! Reading books are changed on Tuesday's and Thursday's. Please remember to also have the library book in your children's book bag on Thursday to be changed. These reading books and library books will be collected on Thursday the 10th and, therefore, please can you remember to put these in your children's bag. If they have not been returned, I will have to follow this up. If they are damaged or lost, please make one of the Acorn team or the office aware.

Any issues or concerns we need to know about, please speak to the Acorn team before and after school or email at: acorn@st-barnabas.kent.sch.uk

It’s been a creative, active and thoughtful week. Well done to all the children for their hard work and enthusiasm!
