Our learning from Term 6 Week 2
We’ve had a very busy and exciting week in Reception!
Phonics
We have been continuing to recap all of our Level 3 sounds and tricky words. The children have been practising segmenting and blending words and sentences, using picture prompts to help them write their own sentences. We’ve also been focusing on using capital letters and finger spaces. This week, the children also learnt a new tricky word from Level 4: ‘said’.
Maths
This week we’ve been working on counting backwards from 5 to 1 and using number tracks to help with this. The children have been exploring where numbers come before or after 5 and using language like ‘greater than’ and ‘less than’ to describe positions on the number track. We’ve also been developing their understanding of shape by learning how to rotate and manipulate shapes to fit into different spaces.
Drawing Club
In Drawing Club we’ve been enjoying the book Commotion in the Ocean to link with our Under the Sea topic. The children explored four keywords: ocean, tentacle, coral and splash, and discussed what they mean. Using different pictures from the book, the children drew sea creatures and described what they could see. They also imagined what they might hear under the sea, such as waves, crabs or turtles, and then drew themselves meeting a sea creature, describing what they might do together. They worked hard to label their drawings with words or sentences.
PE
We’ve also been busy in PE continuing to practise for Sports Day, learning how to complete each activity and work as a team. This week we even practised splitting into groups and understanding how the races will work on the day.
Another exciting part of the week was starting junk modelling in our continuous provision. After reading a story about reusing materials, we talked about how we can make new things from old packaging. The children used junk collected in the classroom to build brilliant creations like rockets and superheroes!
Finally, we were very proud to take part in our first St Barnabas procession. We walked to the church as a whole school and attended a special service led by Father John. The children were brilliant throughout, showing great respect and listening carefully.
Star of the week: Congratulations to Rohullah, who is our star of the week, for the wonderful progress made with his blending in phonics. Rohullah will be taking home his certificate and Wilfred the Elephant to write in the book all about his time spent with Wilfred over the next week and will bring him back next Thursday.
Please remember to read with your child, even for just 5 minutes! Please also remember to record it in the reading record. We will only change your child's book if you have read with them 2 or more times in that week! Reading books are changed on Tuesday's and Thursday's. Please remember to also have the library book in your children's book bag on Thursday to be changed.
Any issues or concerns we need to know about, please speak to the Acorn team before and after school or email at: acorn@st-barnabas.kent.sch.uk
Well done Reception for another fantastic week of learning!
