Term 3 Week 1

What we are doing in Lilac Class for the week beginning 4.1.21

What we are doing this week in Lilac Class

WB: 4.1.21

In Maths this week in Lilac Class, we will be reading and drawing line graphs. We will also be using our reasoning skills to solve problems about line graphs.

In English, we will be writing a Winter Poem using the conventions of poetry writing, for example similes, metaphors, onomatopoeia, alliteration and rhyme. Our poems will be about what we see, hear and feel during winter.  Lilac Class will start to read the preface and first Chapter of ‘Street Child’ by Berlie Doherty.  This story is set in the Docklands of Victorian London. We will be particularly focusing on characterisation and setting.

In RE, our new Big Question is ‘How can following God bring freedom and justice?  We will be exploring this answer through studying Moses. As part of our formative assessment we will be answering the question and writing a few words or phrases that come to mind when we read this question.  We will also be thinking about what freedom and justice mean and considering the question ‘Why might people seek for freedom or fight for justice today?’ As a class we are going to discuss what the life of a Hebrew slave must have been like and will imagine their thoughts and feelings.  We will be thinking about what salvation and oppression mean.

Our topic this term is about the Victorians. Lilac Class are to start this new area of learning by writing down all the things they already know about the Victorians and then what they would like to find out.  We will then be learning about Queen Victoria herself.  In Science, we will start our topic entitled ‘Properties and Changing of Materials’.  We will be begin this session by sorting materials and objects according to their properties.  For example, whether they are waterproof, magnetic, are made through a reversible change or an irreversible change, are a conductor, are flammable, transparent, opaque or they are an insulator.
