This Week's Learning

Term 1 Week 4

What we are doing this week in Lilac Class

WB: 28.9.20

In Maths this week in Lilac Class, we will be developing our knowledge of place value and rounding numbers to the nearest 10, 100, 1,000 and 10,000.  We are working with numbers up to 10,000 and 100,000, comparing and ordering these numbers using our reasoning skills.

In English, we are continuing with our work about ‘Journey’ by Aaron Becker, St. Barnabas’s whole school text.  Our writing task this week is to create a ‘character profile’ of the girl (the central character in the story).  We will examine what we already know about this character from the illustrations and will then draft a description of the story from the girl’s point of view. We are now up to Chapter Three of ‘The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe’, our class guided reading text this term.  When we are answering our comprehension questions are making predictions about the story, summarising parts of the text and learning to ‘think out of the box’ – answers to questions are not always obvious!

In RE, the unit we are studying this term is entitled ‘God’.  This week, we are looking carefully at the following passages from the Bible:  ‘Psalm 103: A Psalm of David’, ‘Isaiah Becomes a prophet’ and ‘John 4:7-12’. Our task is to find out what the Bible says about God.

In Topic, we are studying photographs of Mayan artefacts and working with our talk partners.  Our task is to decide what these artefacts are and what they tell us about the Ancient Mayan Civilisation.  In Science, we are finding out about the different planets in the Solar System and we will also be learning facts about the Sun.  In Music, we are going to be listening to Gustav Holst’s ‘The Planets Suite’, focusing on the different instruments and dynamics we can hear.
