Term 1 Week 7

What we are learning in Lilac Class for the week beginning 19.10.26

What we are learning in Lilac Class for the week beginning 19.10.26

In Maths this week in Lilac Class, we are starting our new block of learning entitled Multiplication and Division.  We will be finding multiples of numbers and common multiples of numbers. For example, 15 is the common multiple of both 5 and 3.  We will then be finding the common factors of a number.  Lilac Class are exploring the relationship between multiplication and division and consolidating our understanding of the words ‘factor’ and ‘multiple’.  For example, 5 is a factor of 20 and 20 is a multiple of 5. Lilac Class will also be identifying prime and composite numbers, building on our knowledge of factors.  Numbers with exactly two factors are called prime numbers and numbers with more than two factors are called composite numbers.  We will be finding out that prime numbers are all odd apart from 2, as it only has two factors.  1 is a special case as it is neither prime nor composite because it has only one factor.  We will then be moving onto learning about square numbers and how they can be built using manipulatives.

In English this week, we are starting to draft our diary account of a Conquistador in 1519 trudging through the tropical rainforest of Mesoamerica in search of gold and glory.  We are writing about what they hear, see, smell and feel and describing their journey sailing across the Atlantic Ocean.

For our Whole Class Guided Reading of  The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis, we are reading Chapter 8 this week.  We are developing our ability to summarise events in the chapter by writing what has happened in less than 30 words.  Summarising is one of our key progression of skills.

In RE, we are continuing with our examination of what moral behaviour means and finding out why Christians believe that confessing their sins to God is important. Lilac Class will be thinking about how they feel when they say sorry and confess to someone that they have upset and how they feel when they forgive someone.

For Time and Place, we are learning about how Mayan society was structured and the differences between an absolute and constitutional Monarchy.  For Science in Lilac Class, we will be thinking about what we learnt on our trip to the Observatory at Herstmonceux and using this to help us complete our work about the Moon.  Why does it shine, and why are there different phases of the Moon?  For ICT, we will finish creating an index of our school website and will then complete an assessment.

For Music, Lilac Class are composing ‘Spacescapes’ inspired by Gustav Holst’s The Planet’s Suite.  We will be working in groups and will record our ideas in the form of a graphic score.  Lilac Class will be using a range of dynamics that we heard when listening to ‘Venus’ and ‘Mars’. We will be performing our compositions to one another and as a class we will be discussing the structure and dynamics used.

For our Spanish lesson this week, Lilac Class will be revising the phrases that we have learnt for the different greetings and we will then have a short conversation with our talk partner about what food we want to write on our shopping list.

There will be no homework set for Half Term. However, I have attached our Wider Curriculum Home Learning Matrix that contains a selection of optional activities your child could do during the holiday, if they wish.
