Term 1, week 4

Week 4, term 1

I was very proud of all the children who completed their baseline assessments last week. They all did their best and worked very hard.

English

This week we will start our unit based on the book Stone Age Boy, by Satoshi Kitamura. The children will be asking and answering questions and ‘hot seating’. We will also be using a thesaurus to improve our writing.

Whole Class Reading

We will be using a non-fiction text this week, all about broken bones. The children will work independently, in groups and as a whole class, to look at the vocabulary, retrieve information and make inferences about the text.

Maths

We are continuing the Place Value unit, looking at how to flexibly partition numbers to 1,000, considering how many hundreds, tens and ones make up a number and then investigating 1, 10 and 100 more.

Time and Place

We will continue the Stone Age to Iron Age topic, investigating primary sources of evidence and how we can make deductions.

Science

Continuing our unit on Rocks and Soils with Mrs Banner.

Computing

We will continue investigating networks and how computers are connected.

RE

This term, we are considering what it means to follow God in the Christian community.

PE

This week we will only have PE on Friday, due to the Church service on Tuesday. We will start our Netball unit.  Please make sure to send your child in with a PE kit, hat and water bottle.

Reading Records and Homework

Reading records need to be in school on a Monday and Thursday. If your child wants to change their book on another day, we will do our best to accommodate this. Homework books will be sent out on Tuesdays and need to be returned the following Monday. I have shown the children how to locate the reading element on Purple Mash, as there seems to be an issue with the link. However, if you have any questions about this, or any part of the homework, please email on the class email address.

If you have any questions, at any point in the year, please email the class email: maple@st-barnabas.kent.sch.uk. For any urgent messages, please email the main office email.

Kind regards

Mrs Smallcombe and the Maple Team
