Term 6 Week 1

Our learning from Term 6 Week 1

Phonics

This week in Phonics we have been revisiting our Level 3 sounds and tricky words. The children enjoyed practising recognising the sounds, reading the tricky words, and having a go at writing words and simple sentences using them.

Some children also took part in a small group to recap Level 2 sounds. In this group we focused on blending and segmenting CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant) words and writing them independently. It has been lovely to see growing confidence in both reading and writing.

Maths

In Maths, we have been exploring equivalence and doubles. The children made and described double arrangements, sorted numbers to 10 into doubles and not doubles, and discussed whether groups were equal or unequal.

We also matched double amounts, created doubles on our rekenreks, and revisited our understanding of even and odd numbers. The children are becoming more confident at spotting patterns and explaining their mathematical thinking.

RE

This week in RE we began learning about what we can learn from Old Testament stories.

To start the lesson, Miss Burkinshaw dropped rubbish and recycling all over the floor! We talked about how this made us feel and why littering is harmful. The children worked together to help tidy up and agreed that looking after our environment is important.

We then explored what the Old Testament is and read the story of Noah’s Ark. We discussed the promise Noah made to God about caring for the Earth and talked about what a promise means. The children created beautiful rainbow pictures for our RE display, linking to the rainbow at the end of Noah’s story.

Understanding the World

Our new topic this term is Under the Sea. This week we explored different sea creatures and learnt about life beneath the ocean. The children drew their favourite sea creatures and practised writing or sounding out their names.

PE

In PE we have continued our preparation for Sports Day. We practised hurdles, relay races, and running races, focusing on teamwork, coordination, and perseverance.

A Wonderful Start to Term 6

It has been a fantastic first week back, filled with enthusiastic learning across all areas of the curriculum. We are looking forward to another exciting term together!

Star of the week: Congratulations to Pamir, who was our star of the week this week, for doing really well in his phonics Level 3 assessment! Parmir will be taking home his certificate and Wilfred the Elephant to write in the book all about his time spent with Wilfred over the next week and will bring him back next Thursday.

Please remember to read with your child, even for just 5 minutes! Please also remember to record it in the reading record. We will only change your child's book if you have read with them 2 or more times in that week! Reading books are changed on Tuesday's and Friday's. Please also remember to have the library book in your children's book bag on Thursday to be changed.

Any issues or concerns we need to know about, please speak to the Acorn team before and after school or email at: acorn@st-barnabas.kent.sch.uk
