Term 5 Week 5

Our learning from Term 5 Week 5
This week marked the final week of Term 5 and the children have worked incredibly hard!
Phonics
In Phonics, we learnt our new tricky words ‘be’ and ‘are’. The children worked together to create sentences using picture prompts containing these tricky words that were modelled on the board. They then practised reading sentences with these words before having a go at writing their own sentences independently. We also learnt the new sound ‘er’. The children practised saying the sound and action, segmenting and blending words containing this sound and then writing their own words using ‘er’. We also continued to develop our sentence writing using a rainforest picture prompt and the sentence stem “I can see…”.
Maths
In Maths, we spent much of the week revisiting and consolidating previous learning. The children practised subitising numbers to 5 and making equivalent amounts using rekenreks. They also worked on counting out 6 or 7 objects from a larger group and checking carefully. We continued practising counting sequences to 10 and representing numbers 5–10 using a “5 and a bit” structure. The children also worked on counting up to 20 objects, practised saying the tricky teen numbers, and shared strategies for counting larger groups of objects that cannot be moved. We also recapped finding 1 less with numbers to 10.
Understanding the world
In Understanding the World, we explored maps, discussing different types of maps and what they can be used for. The children then coloured a map using the correct colours to represent land and sea.
Art and Design
In Art and Design, the children enjoyed using paint to create their own flower paintings, carefully thinking about colour and detail.
Drawing Club
In Drawing Club, we read the story Errol’s Garden. We spent time discussing the story and learning the new vocabulary words garden, neighbour, dream, and teamwork. Throughout the week, the children drew Errol’s dream garden and imagined what it might look like. They then used their creativity to think about what would happen if the garden came alive for one night — perhaps the garden flew to the moon or went on a magical adventure!
PE
In PE, we focused on following instructions carefully and moving safely whilst taking part in tagging games. We also continued practising for Sports Day. On the final day of term, the children had great fun enjoying time outside with the bikes and trikes.
It has been a wonderful final week of Term 5 and the children have shown fantastic enthusiasm and effort across all areas of learning. We hope everyone has a lovely half-term break and look forward to seeing everyone refreshed and ready for another exciting term!
Star of the week: Congratulations to Noah, who was our star of the week this week, for working really hard on his writing in Phonics! Noah will be taking home his certificate and Wilfred the Elephant to write in the book all about his time spent with Wilfred over the next week and will bring him back next Thursday.
Please remember to read with your child, even for just 5 minutes! Please also remember to record it in the reading record. We will only change your child's book if you have read with them 2 or more times in that week! Reading books are changed on Tuesday's and Friday's. Please also remember to have the library book in your children's book bag on Thursday to be changed.
