Term 5 Week 3

Our learning from Term 5 Week 3

Phonics

This week in Phonics, we learnt the new tricky word “they”. The children practised writing sentences using this word before having a go at writing their own sentences independently. We also learnt the new sound “air”. The children practised blending words containing this sound, writing words with the sound, and sorting pictures based on the sounds we learnt this week and last week.

Maths

In Maths, we have been working on joining in with a backwards count from 5 to 1 and ordering numbers from 1–10 on a class number track. The children have also been using language to describe positions on a number track and identifying whether numbers are before or after 5. We also began to understand the rules of a simple linear track game. Alongside this, the children have continued recapping “1 more”.

Understanding the world

In Understanding the World, we explored what plants need to grow. We discussed important things such as soil, water, carbon dioxide, sunlight, and space. Some of the children then had a go at writing these words before we added them to our working wall.

Art and design

In Art and Design, linking to our plant discussions, the children drew the stages of a sunflower’s growth. They then decorated their work and folded it in a special way so that it opened up into a sunflower.

PE

In PE, with our topic of games this term, we warmed up by playing the traffic light game. We then played games such as Red Light, Green Light and Please Mr Crocodile, alongside other similar games. We have also begun our Sports Day training, practising how to take part in a running race, including where to start and where to finish.

RE

In RE, we looked at photographs of cathedrals and discussed how these are large churches led by a bishop. We talked about how people often light candles in cathedrals when saying a prayer. We had five candles, but only lit four of them at first. We then discussed who we might ask for help when we need support or friendship. We talked about how some people light a candle to ask God for help. Finally, we shared a prayer together and lit the last candle to demonstrate this.

Star of the week: Congratulations to Treasure, who was our star of the week this week, for showing fantastic progress in Maths! Treasure will be taking home her certificate and Wilfred the Elephant to write in the book all about her time spent with Wilfred over the next week and will bring him back next Thursday.

Please remember to read with your child, even for just 5 minutes! Please also remember to record it in the reading record. We will only change your child's book if you have read with them 2 or more times in that week! Reading books are changed on Tuesday's and Friday's. Please also remember to have the library book in your children's book bag on Thursday to be changed.

Any issues or concerns we need to know about, please speak to the Acorn team before and after school or email at: acorn@st-barnabas.kent.sch.uk

Well done to all the children for another fantastic week!
