Term 5 Week 3

Here is an outline of your learning for term 5, week 3:

Term 5 Week 3 – overview

Spelling and grammar – we will be adding the prefixes sub, anti and auto to words.

We are continuing with our whole class guided reading text, Lob.  Lucy has gone to visit Granny Annie in her new cottage, despite feeling it won’t be the same without Grandad.  Lob has travelled further south and found himself on the London Underground – an experience he didn’t enjoy!  Lucy and Lob are getting closer without realising it!

In English, we will be delving further into the epic Anglo-Saxon poem, Beowulf.  This week, we will explore the building tension in the story and work on creating tensions in our own writing by using some dramatic fronted adverbials.  We will also look at the conventions of story-telling that we find in Beowulf.

In Maths, we will complete our work on perimeter by calculating the perimeter of polygons.  After an end of unit assessment, we will begin fractions by looking at what a ‘whole’ means. On Thursday we dedicate time to working on our personal times tables targets.  Regular, short burst practise at home will really support this.  Each week, pupils are progressing towards their personal targets, which is very encouraging.

In RE, we will be working on the Gospel unit, thinking about the kind of world that Jesus wanted.  This week we be learning about the parable of the Good Samaritan and what this story tells us about the kind of world that Jesus wanted.

In History, we will be learning about who the Anglo-Saxons were and where the different tribes came from.  Last week we learnt about the Anglo-Saxon burial ship discovered at Sutton Hoo and in Art we will be designing some of our own treasures!

PE is on Tuesday morning and Thursday afternoon.   This term we are doing athletics and cricket.

Reading records will be sent home, with free-reading children choosing a book from the selection in class or bringing one from the reading scheme.  All children have an additional book in their tray for reading sessions in class.  Please could we have reading records in school to be checked on Tuesday and Friday mornings.
