Term 5 Week 2

Our learning from Term 5 Week 2

This week has been another busy and exciting one in Reception!

Phonics

In Phonics this week, we learnt the new sounds ‘ow’, ‘oi’ and ‘ear’. The children practised blending words containing these sounds and worked hard on segmenting them into individual sounds. We also applied our learning by writing words that included these new sounds.

Maths

In Maths, we have been recapping numbers 6–9 using the “5 and a bit” structure. The children revisited how 10 can be composed of 5 and 5 and practised identifying when 10 is shown using structured arrangements of objects. They matched numerals to quantities represented as 5 and a bit and explored different ways to make 10. We used dice frames and finger patterns to represent the composition of 10, and the children used structured arrangements to find missing parts and solve simple problems. Such as, when seeing 3 counters on a double dice frame, how many more would we need to make 10? We also continued developing our understanding of “how many” and how to add more to a group.

Drawing Club

In Drawing Club, we have been reading Caterpillar and Bean. We watched a video about the life cycle of a bean and discussed what a bean grows into. We also talked about the life cycle of a caterpillar and how it turns into a butterfly. The children explored key vocabulary and drew the life cycle of a bean, followed by the life cycle of a caterpillar. We then used our imaginations to think about what a bean might dream of becoming or doing—ideas included becoming a butterfly, growing into a flower, or even going to McDonald’s! The children wrote sentences to describe their drawings and share their creative ideas.

PE

In PE, we have been focusing on games and teamwork. We started with a fun animal-themed warm-up and then played games such as “What’s the Time, Mr Wolf?”, “Follow the Leader” and “Duck, Duck, Goose.” The children also had their second session on the climbing frame/apparatus, where they listened carefully to instructions and demonstrated great confidence and cooperation.

Growing and changing topic

We also had a very special moment this week as our tadpoles grew into froglets. We all gathered around the school pond to carefully release them into their new home. The children were very excited and watched closely as the froglets entered the pond!

Star of the week: Congratulations to Ella, who was our star of the week this week, for working hard and improving in all subjects! Ella will be taking home her certificate and Wilfred the Elephant to write in the book all about her time spent with Wilfred over the next week and will bring him back next Thursday.

Please remember to read with your child, even for just 5 minutes! Please also remember to record it in the reading record. We will only change your child's book if you have read with them 2 or more times in that week! Reading books are changed on Tuesday's and Friday's. Please also remember to have the library book in your children's book bag on Thursday to be changed.

Any issues or concerns we need to know about, please speak to the Acorn team before and after school or email at: acorn@st-barnabas.kent.sch.uk

Well done to all the children for another fantastic week!
