Term 5 Week 2

Here is an outline of your learning for term 5, week 2:

Term 5 Week 5 – overview

We have ukulele on Monday afternoon with Mr Lawrence.

Spelling and grammar – we will be adding the ‘ly’ suffix to words.

We are continuing with our whole class guided reading text, Lob.  Lob has escaped from captivity and experienced being thrown off a narrow boat.  He knows somehow that he needs to travel south, but why?  Will he ever see Lucy again?  We will continue to explore this fascinating and emotional story.

In English, we will be delving further into the epic Anglo-Saxon poem, Beowulf.  This week, we will design our own monsters and use powerful verbs to describe the way they move and behave.  We will also learn about the ‘show not tell’ technique to enhance our narrative writing.  At the end of the week, we will be thinking about how the author has created tension in the story, by looking at the concept of a tension mountain.

In Maths, we will continue working on perimeter by calculating the perimeter of rectilinear shapes, missing lengths in rectilinear shapes and the perimeter of polygons.  On Thursday we dedicate time to working on our personal times tables targets.  Regular, short burst practise at home will really support this.  Each week, pupils are progressing towards their personal targets, which is very encouraging.

In RE, we will be working on the Gospel unit, thinking about the kind of world that Jesus wanted.  We have learnt about the calling of the first disciples and will this week be learning about the healing of the leper and what this story tells us about the kind of world that Jesus wanted.

In Science, we will be carrying out an investigation into tooth decay using eggs and various different liquids.  Things could get smelly in our classroom!!!

In History, we will be learning about who the Anglo-Saxons were and where the different tribes came from.

PE is on Tuesday morning and Thursday afternoon.   This term we are doing athletics and cricket.

Reading records will be sent home, with free-reading children choosing a book from the selection in class or bringing one from the reading scheme.  All children have an additional book in their tray for reading sessions in class.  Please could we have reading records in school to be checked on Tuesday and Friday mornings.
