Term 4 Week 2

What we are learning in Lilac Class for the week beginning 2.3.26

What we are doing this week in Lilac Class for the week beginning 2.3.26

For Maths this week in Lilac Class, we are finding equivalent fractions and decimals (tenths and hundredths) using counters, bead strings and number lines to support learning.  We will then be looking at equivalent fractions and decimals, specifically focusing on halves, quarters, fifths and tenths. We will also be identifying thousandths as fractions and decimals. Lilac Class are then moving onto ordering and comparing decimals with the same number of decimal places using place value charts and counters and number lines.

In English this week in Lilac Class, we are reading and analysing poems about the Victorian workhouse.  What features of poetry writing have been used and why are they effective?  We will then be writing our own narrative poems drawing on our annotations of workhouse photographs and texts that we have been studying over the last couple of weeks in preparation for our poetry writing.

For Whole Class Guided Reading, Lilac Class are reading Chapters 13 and 14 of Berlie Doherty’s Street Child entitled ‘The Lily’ and ‘The Waterman’s Arms’. We are finding evidence in the text that shows us that Jim was scared of Grimy Nick and explaining why Jim has no control over his life and the decisions he makes.

For RE in Lilac Class, we are examining the events leading up to Jesus’s resurrection in the Gospels.  We will be discussing the events that we feel are most important to us and annotating texts.

For Time and Place, Lilac Class are learning about Victorian healthcare and how this developed during Queen Victoria's reign.   For Science in Lilac Class, we are finding out (through observing a container full of hot water covered in clingfilm) that evaporation and condensation are reversible changes.  What is evaporation and condensation?  What is a gas and a liquid and how do the molecules behave differently?  In ICT, Lilac Class will be explaining what a field and a record is in a data base and navigating a flat-file database to compare different views of information.  We will be choosing which field to sort data by to answer a given question.

In French, Lilac Class are learning words for different French food and designing our own French menus.  We will be practising speaking our French working in pairs, using the phrases for ‘What would you like?’ ‘Can I help you?’ ‘I would like’ and ‘Would you like anything else?’

For Design and the Arts, we are completing our wallpaper designs inspired by William Morris and will then start to engrave our designs onto a polyprint tile that will be used as a printing block.  Lilac Class will then be ready to print wallpaper.

Please don’t forget that Lilac Class and Singing Club are performing at the Tunbridge Wells Assembly Halls.  If you have not already done so, make sure you have purchased your tickets for the Tunbridge Wells Singing Festival on Tuesday 3rd March at the Assembly Halls.  Here is the link:
