Term 3 Week 5

Our learning from Term 3 Week 5
We have had another exciting and busy week in Reception, full of learning, creativity and some very special dinosaur-themed surprises!
Phonics
In phonics this week, we have learnt two new sounds: ‘w’ and ‘x’. The children practised:
-
Saying the sounds using actions
-
Writing the sounds correctly
-
Blending and segmenting words containing w and x
We have also introduced a new tricky word, ‘she’. Tricky words cannot be sounded out, so the children are learning to recognise them by sight.
Maths
In maths, we have been learning to say when someone has more or fewer of the same kind of object. We talked about how size and colour do not change the amount – what matters is how many there are. We have also begun working on number bonds to 10, helping the children build a strong understanding of how numbers fit together.
Drawing Club
In Drawing Club, we have been reading The Dirty Great Dinosaur. We explored new vocabulary from the story and discussed what the words mean. The children then learnt about the beginning, middle and end of a story. They drew pictures to show what happened at each part and had a go at writing about their ideas. They did a fantastic job retelling the story in their own way.
PE
In PE, we have been playing games and learning about the different roles within them. The children discussed transport and different ways to move, following instructions carefully while taking part in fun, active games.
A Very Exciting Dinosaur Day!
On Wednesday, we had a very exciting day when a dinosaur broke into our school. The dinosaur created a big mess in our outside area! The children became palaeontologists and spent the day investigating clues to work out which dinosaur had visited.
They:
-
Dug through sand to find fossils
-
Investigated dinosaur eggs
-
Made their own dinosaur fossils
After working incredibly hard, the children discovered that it was a Diplodocus that had broken into our school. It was a brilliant day full of curiosity, teamwork and excitement!
Star of the week: Congratulations to Rayan, who is our star of the week, for knowing all of his level 2 sounds and tricky words! Rayan will be taking home his certificate and Wilfred the Elephant to write in the book all about his time spent with Wilfred over the next week and will bring him back next Thursday.
Please remember to read with your child, even for just 5 minutes! Please also remember to record it in the reading record. We will only change your child's book if you have read with them 2 or more times in that week! Reading books are changed on Tuesday's and Friday's. Please also remember to have the library book in your children's book bag on Thursday to be changed.
Any issues or concerns we need to know about, please speak to the Acorn team before and after school or email at: acorn@st-barnabas.kent.sch.uk
Well done Reception for another fantastic week of learning!
