Term 3 Week 3

Our learning from Term 3 Week 3

We have had another busy and exciting week in Reception with lots of great learning across the curriculum!

Phonics

This week in phonics we have continued to recap our Phase 2 sounds and tricky words. The children have been practising blending sounds together to read words, segmenting words to help with spelling, and writing words and simple sentences. It has been lovely to see the children growing in confidence and using their phonics skills more independently.

Maths

In maths, we have been exploring how the number 5 can be partitioned into different parts. Using the song Five Speckled Frogs, we looked at how 5 can be made from 4 and 1, and also from 3 and 2. The children worked on explaining the parts of 5 and finding a hidden number, for example, working out how many frogs were in the pool and how many were on the log. We have also been exploring height as a type of length, using the language tall and short to describe objects and people.

RE

In RE we have been learning about what makes every person unique and precious. We talked about christenings and services of thanksgiving, and how families say thank you for their baby. The children also discussed how Father John welcomes people into the church and how we can welcome others into school, especially someone who is new.

Understanding the World / Maths Links

Linking to our maths learning, the children practised writing numbers 1–10 on their whiteboards. They then wrote the numbers in order on their Numbersaurus and coloured it carefully, showing great focus.

Drawing Club

In Drawing Club, we have been reading Dear Dinosaur. We talked about different ways people can communicate, such as letters, cards, postcards and emails. The children drew a museum and wrote a word to label something inside the museum. They then drew their favourite dinosaur and, using a dinosaur word mat, had a go at writing its name. Finally, we imagined an adventure that Max and T-Rex could go on together. The children chose a place, drew it, and labelled where they went. Our vocabulary focus words this week were museum, letter, scared, and fossil, and we discussed what each of these words means.

PE

In PE, we have been developing our ball skills, particularly dribbling with our feet. The children practised stepping over the ball, rolling it under their feet, and then dribbling it with control. We have also been working on running and stopping safely, making sure we are aware of the space around us.

Star of the week: Congratulations to Ryan, who is our star of the week, for always doing the right thing in lessons and concentrating so well! Ryan will be taking home his certificate and Wilfred the Elephant to write in the book all about his time spent with Wilfred over the next week and will bring him back next Thursday.

Please remember to read with your child, even for just 5 minutes! Please also remember to record it in the reading record. We will only change your child's book if you have read with them 2 or more times in that week! Reading books are changed on Tuesday's and Friday's. Please also remember to have the library book in your children's book bag on Thursday to be changed.

Any issues or concerns we need to know about, please speak to the Acorn team before and after school or email at: acorn@st-barnabas.kent.sch.uk

Well done Reception for another fantastic week of learning!
