Term 3 Week 2

Our learning from Term 3 Week 2
We have had another busy and exciting week in Acorns! Here is a snapshot of what we have been learning across the curriculum.
Phonics
This week we learnt our final two Level 2 sounds: ‘ss’ and ‘s’ (as in pigs, pronounced /z/). A huge well done to Acorns for now knowing all of their Level 2 sounds. We practised saying the sounds, using the actions, and writing them correctly. The children then began writing simple sentences using the sounds they know. We also started our Level 2 sound recap, revisiting each sound, how to say it, the action, how to write it, and words that contain that sound.
Maths
In maths, we have been working on recognising numerals 1–5 and ordering numbers correctly.
The children matched numerals to quantities and to different representations, helping them understand that numbers can look different but still represent the same amount. We have also continued our learning about length, comparing objects and using language such as longer and shorter.
Drawing Club
Linked to our topic of Dinosaurs, we read the story Harry and the Bucketful of Dinosaurs.
We discussed the story together before completing several drawing challenges:
-
Drawing Harry when he first finds the dinosaurs
-
Drawing a setting where Harry might take the dinosaurs
-
Designing and naming their own dinosaur, ending in “-saurus”
The children also labelled their drawings, using their phonics knowledge.
We also discussed our four vocabulary words from the story and explored their meanings.
Understanding the World
We continued learning all about dinosaurs—what they are, when they lived, and who discovered them. The children were fascinated and asked lots of thoughtful questions.
RE
In RE, we have been digging deeper into Incarnation. We explored the Bible story Jesus Welcomes the Children (Mark 10:13–16). We read the story, acted it out, and talked about how everyone is unique and precious to God. We also linked this to our school vision.
PE
In PE, we focused on developing accuracy when throwing at a target and improving skills in bouncing and catching a ball.
Star of the week: Congratulations to Bryan, who is our star of the week, for working hard on his writing. Bryan will be taking home his certificate and Wilfred the Elephant to write in the book all about his time spent with Wilfred over the next week and will bring him back next Thursday.
Please remember to read with your child, even for just 5 minutes! Please also remember to record it in the reading record. We will only change your child's book if you have read with them 2 or more times in that week! Reading books are changed on Tuesday's and Friday's. Please also remember to have the library book in your children's book bag on Thursday to be changed.
Any issues or concerns we need to know about, please speak to the Acorn team before and after school or email at: acorn@st-barnabas.kent.sch.uk
