What we are learning this week in Lilac Class for the week beginning 27.10.25

In Maths this week in Lilac Class, wea re starting our new block of learning entitled Multiplication and Division.  We will be finding multiples of numbers and common multiples of numbers.  For example, 15, is the common multiple of both 5 and 3.  We will then be finding the common factors of a number.  Lilac are exploring the relationship between multiplication and division and consolidating our understanding of the words 'factor' and 'multiple'  We will be also finding out that prime numbers are all odd apart from 2, as it only has two factors.  1 is a special case as it is neither prime not composite because it has only one factor.  Lilac are then moving onto learning about square numbers and how they can be built using manipulatives.

In our Whole Class Reading text, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe by C.S.Lewis we are reading Chapter 8 this week. We are developing our ability to summarise events in the chapter this week bu writing what has happenend in less than 30 words. Summarising is one of our key progression if skills.  In English, we are finishing our diary accounts of a Conquistador exploring the Mesoamerican rainforests in 1519.  

In RE, we are starting our new unit of learning entitled ‘Incarnation’.  As part of formative assessment, we are answering our big question ‘Was Jesus the Messiah?’  

For Time and Place, we are continuing with our learning about how Mayan society was structured and the differences between an absolute and constitutional Monarchy.  We will then start our work about the beliefs and religious practices of the Ancient Mayan Civilisation. We will be learning about the different gods and how they affected the lives of the Mayan people.

For Science in Lilac Class, we are learning about the different phases of the Moon and why these happen.  We will be finding out how these occur drawing on what we learnt from the Earth, Sun and Moon Workshop at Herstmonceux.  For ICT, we are starting our new unit of learning entitled ‘Video Production’.  This week we are identifying features of a video and reviewing and comparing different videos.

In Art, Lilac Class will be making Mayan pottery based on original Mayan artefacts.  This week we will be sketching the shape of our pottery and what design it will be decorated with, examining real Mayan pottery for inspiration!
