Term 5 Week 2

Our learning from Term 5 Week 2

Welcome to another exciting week in Reception!

In Phonics, we introduced the new sounds 'ow', 'oi', and 'ear'. The children enjoyed learning the actions to match each sound, practising saying them aloud and writing words containing them. We’ve also been stretching ourselves by writing sentences that include these new sounds – a fantastic effort all round!

In Maths, we have continued developing our counting strategies. We’ve been focusing on how to count larger sets of objects, including those we cannot see all at once, and how to count on from a given number. We’ve also revisited the concept of time – discussing the order and sequence of key daily events and using language like "before", "after", and "later".

Drawing Club has linked perfectly with our topic of Growing and Changing as we explored the lovely book Caterpillar and Bean. We introduced vocabulary such as seed, shoot, leaf, and root. The children drew the life cycle of a bean, the transformation of a butterfly, and even used their imagination to illustrate what a bean might dream about while underground! They then worked hard to label their drawings or write short sentences to describe them.

In PE, we focused on playground games and how to play them in a safe but fun way. The children also loved exploring the climbing frame, building confidence, balance and coordination as they navigated it safely with growing independence.

In RE, we explored the message behind the commandment “Love your neighbour as you love yourself”. We listened to and discussed the story of The Good Samaritan, identifying the hero of the story and the lessons it teaches us about kindness, compassion, and helping others. The children shared brilliant ideas about how we can be caring and helpful to our friends in school.

Star of the week: Congratulations to Jewel , who is our star of the week, for her work in Phonics.  Jewel will be taking home her certificate and Wilfred the Elephant to write in the book all about her time spent with Wilfred over the next week and will bring him back next Thursday.

Please remember to read with your child, even for just 5 minutes! Please also remember to record it in the reading record. We will only change your child's book if you have read with them 2 or more times in that week! Reading books are changed on Tuesday's and Thursday's. Please remember to have the library book in your children's book bag on Thursday to be changed.

Any issues or concerns we need to know about, please speak to the Acorn team before and after school or email at: acorn@st-barnabas.kent.sch.uk

We are so proud of how the children are growing, not just in their learning, but in their kindness and creativity too. Well done Reception for another wonderful week!
