Term 5 Week 3

Our learning from Term 5 Week 3

Welcome to another wonderful week in Reception!

In Phonics, we have been recapping our recently learnt sounds and introducing a new tricky word, they, as well as the new sound air. The children have worked hard to say the sound, blend it in words, and use it in sentences. We’ve also enjoyed writing these sentences together and practising applying our tricky words.

In Maths, we’ve focused on visualising, making, and describing the spatial arrangements of 6. The children worked in pairs to create their own patterns of 6 using counters and practised subitising up to 6. We also began learning about 3D shapes—recognising and naming them through hands-on activities.

In Understanding the World, linked to our Growing and Changing topic, we discussed what plants need, to grow. The children came up with ideas such as sunlight, water, soil, and air (carbon dioxide). Some children were chosen to write these keywords in their best handwriting to proudly display on our working wall. We’ve also continued our work on life cycles by creating our own butterfly life cycle diagrams.

In PE, we continued developing our playground games, focusing on playing safely and kindly with others. The children came up with new game ideas and practised them with enthusiasm. We also had another session on the climbing frame, revisiting how to use it safely and sensibly—which they absolutely loved again this week!

In RE, we explored photographs of cathedrals and talked about what they are. We learnt about the tradition of lighting candles to say a prayer—something we also do in assembly. The children reflected on who they can ask for help, suggesting people like teachers, friends, and parents. We then talked about how we can also ask God for help through prayer. To end the session, we lit our own candle and read a lovely prayer of thanks and help, shared by the children.

To top off a fantastic week, we had a very exciting visit from our school dog, Betsy! The children were thrilled to see her again, and it was a lovely moment of calm and joy in our busy week.

Star of the week: Congratulations to Lorraine, who is our star of the week, for demonstrating an increase in confidence and engagement in her phonics. Lorraine will be taking home her certificate and Wilfred the Elephant to write in the book all about her time spent with Wilfred over the next week and will bring him back next Thursday.

Please remember to read with your child, even for just 5 minutes! Please also remember to record it in the reading record. We will only change your child's book if you have read with them 2 or more times in that week! Reading books are changed on Tuesday's and Thursday's. Please remember to have the library book in your children's book bag on Thursday to be changed.

Any issues or concerns we need to know about, please speak to the Acorn team before and after school or email at: acorn@st-barnabas.kent.sch.uk

It’s been a thoughtful and exciting week of learning—well done Reception!
