Oak Class
Week Beginning: Monday 22nd June
Hello there, Oak Class!
Thank you to everyone who voted for the class song and dance. I can now reveal that the results for the song were very, very close; 19 people voted - 9 voted for High Hopes but 10 voted for Once I was in Year 1. We will work on changing a few of the words to make it more personalised and get them to you as soon as possible. I think that, because it was such a close vote, we may sing High Hopes too. The link to the song is https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IPXIgEAGe4U I have also attached the words in this week’s pack. The winning dance song was Dance Monkey: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q0hyYWKXF0Q so start thinking about some moves you might want to use.
If you have any problems, my email address is: oak@st-barnabas.kent.sch.uk
Sending lots of love to you all!
Miss Mercer
Monday:
- Maths: Today I would like you to do some revision on converting fractions to percentages. Watch the video at https://youtu.be/CWnElO8HVwY for a quick recap (it also goes over the answers to the starter questions), then answer the questions on the worksheet.
- English: Start off by completing the synonyms and antonyms activity. Next, have a go at the newspaper article activity. Look at the picture and come up with a short article about it. Remember the opening paragraph should contain all the ‘who, what, where, when, how’ information; the middle paragraph/s should add more specific detail; and the final paragraph should sum the story up. You could include quotes or reported speech, too!
- Science: This week we are learning about Steve Jobs – I’m sure many of you have heard of him. Go through the PowerPoint (it is best to download it and have it on slideshow mode) then complete the circuit and reading comprehension activities. Sorry the work isn’t that fun! It is quite hard to find things for you to do where you would already have all the resources at home!
Tuesday
- Maths: Today we are revising equivalent fractions, decimals and percentages. As yesterday, watch the video at https://youtu.be/m8eOQ7tul6o to recap how to convert between them if you need to, then complete the questions on the sheet. I’ll go over the starter questions too.
- English: Start with the verb tenses activity then move onto guided reading. Class book: Wonder – read
- Google meet: Last week, I emailed you about arranging some more Google Meet sessions. For those of you that got back to me, I have emailed you with the time of your meeting. Check on Google Classroom for the link or email the Oak email address for the code. For those of you that have not asked for a timeslot, use this time to continue planning your art work, practising the leavers’ song and coming up with a fifteen second dance/gymnastic/comedy performance to go with the dance track.
Wednesday
- Maths: Today we are continuing our work from yesterday but we are now ordering fractions, decimals and percentages. Watch the video at https://youtu.be/V_69GiATM3 in case you need a reminder, then answer the questions on the sheet.
- English: Start with the fronted adverbial activity. Class book: Wonder - read Four Things, Ex-Friends, Snow and Fortune Favours The Bold (p103-107) Then answer these two questions. 1) How does Jack feel about August after hanging out with August at school for a few weeks? 2) Jack says the bravest thing he ever did was “becoming friends with August.” How was Jack brave to become friends with August? Don’t forget to really think about your answers; don’t just write one line.
- PE: I have given you some activities to try out from the ‘Get Set’ website. The worksheet contain all the links you need and the good news is that you don’t need any special equipment!
Thursday
- Maths: Today we are moving onto percentages of amounts. Watch the video at https://youtu.be/1h_zwtq5wxI to get a reminder of what to do, then have a go at the questions on the sheet.
- English: Start with the parenthesis activity. Next, class book: Wonder – read Private School, In Science, Partners, Detention and Season’s Greetings (p107- 114). Then answer these three questions 1) How is Jack different from the majority of kids in private school? 2) Why do you think Jack made mean comments about August on Halloween? Do you think he is still a good person? 3) Is Jack’s punishment for punching Julian appropriate? How would you punish him? Don’t forget to really think about your answers; don’t just write one line.
- Art: I would like us to start on our piece of artwork for our collaborative project. Last week, you had a practise with different pattern and colour combinations; hopefully you have now decided on your design. This week, I would just like you to carefully draw out the pattern. Remember the shape you were given. It doesn’t only have to be made up of that shape but it should be the main them. Refer back to the example sheet if you are still unsure. I have attached a reminder of each person’s shape and colours at the end of the plans J
Friday
- Maths: Maths investigation today! The idea is that you add up the two numbers that are adjacent (next to) and put the answer in the square above. Keep going until you get to the top of the tower. There are two levels – towers 4 and towers 5 – so you can either choose the one you think is suitable or do them both if you feel like it.
- English: Today I would like you to plan and write a story about absolutely anything you want! I have included a planning sheet to help you structure your story but the rest is up to you. Think about what we have learned about writing this year (language, description, structure, description etc.) and come up with the best piece that you can. I want to be impressed!
- RE: Week 3 of the Kingdom of God unit. Look at the six statements on the sheet. Which two statements about Jesus do you think are the most important and why? Which two would a Christian think were the most important? Why? Which statement do you disagree with most and why?
