What we are doing this week in Lilac Class

This week is Assessment Week in school and it will take up some of usual timetabled lessons that we would normally have in the morning. In Maths in Lilac Class, we will be consolidating our work on rounding numbers within a million. We will then be moving onto Negative Numbers exploring their position on a number line and using them in context.  This means for example, using negative numbers as temperature to be able to count back from zero.    

For English this week, we are continuing with our diary writing. We are imagining that we are the Conquistador Hernán Cortés who is writing a diary entry about his experience of trudging through the tropical rainforest of Mesoamerica with his men and then discovers some gigantic ancient ruins.  Our focus is to use the features of diary writing such as writing in the first person and in the past tense referring to emotions and feelings, writing events in chronological order and using fronted time adverbials. 

Our Whole Class Guided Reading text this term is ‘The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe’ by C.S. Lewis.  We are reading Chapter Five and we will be analysing Edmund’s character in more detail, coming up with our own words that describe him. 

In RE this week, we be examining what ‘moral behaviour’ means and what God does not like using our previous knowledge.  Lilac Class will be exploring what ‘moral behaviour’ means and making connections by thinking about how we can show ‘moral behaviour’ in the way we live our lives in and out of school. 

In Science this week, we are exploring the Sun in more depth and finding out about how far away it is from the Earth, what it is made of and how big it is.  We will also be learning some fun facts about the Sun, Earth and Moon.  For example, the Earth measures over 40,000km at its circumference and travels at 100,000km through space.  In ICT this week, we are continuing with our block of learning entitled ‘Coding’.  The children will be reviewing coding vocabulary and will use a design to create a program. In Topic, Lilac Class will be learning about how Mayan society was organised and where the different Mayan states can be located on a map of Mesoamerica.  In Art, we are continuing with our Mayan artwork based on original designs using the techniques of the Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama.
