Term 2 Week 2

Here is an outline of your learning for term 2, week 2:

Term 2 Week 2 – overview

Reading challenge – we have made a visual display to track our home reading.  Each week when reading records are checked, every child who brings their record (completed with their weekly reading)will earn a star.  Remember that 10 minutes' reading each day makes a huge difference to overall literacy and especially expanding vocabulary!

Our ukulele lesson with Mr Lawrence will be on Monday morning.  Ukuleles are provided by school.

Spelling and grammar –we will be learning words with the prefix il-. We will continue to work on using pronouns and recognising fronted adverbials.

In English, we will be reflecting on writing our amazing Pompeii stories by thinking about what we did well, aspects of our writing we need to improve and thinking about the progress we have made this year.  We will then move on to a unit on instruction writing, beginning by thinking about the key features of instructions.  We will then learn about Roman roads and use them as a basis to create a set of instructions.

In Maths, we will be adding 4 digits with more than one exchange, subtracting with no exchange and subtracting with an exchange.

In guided reading, we will continue with our text, The Iron Man, by Ted Hughes.  This text will introduce readers to more challenging vocabulary and imagery.

In RE, our new unit of focus is ‘Incarnation’ and we will be considering the big question, ‘What is the Trinity?’ We will be learning about the similarities between John’s account of the Gospel and the creation narrative.

In Science, we are going to spend two afternoons carrying out an investigation into sound and distance.  This will involve creating a hypothesis, designing a fair test, carrying out our test, recording and analysing results.

In art, we will create and paint our own still life paintings based on the work of Giorgio Morandi.  Last week, we did an excellent job of mixing really muted paint shades which we will need to use in our own paintings.

PE is on MONDAY MORNING and THURSDAY AFTERNOON with Mr Luckhurst.

Reading records have been sent home with most children choosing a book from the selection in class or from the reading scheme.  All children have an additional book in their tray for reading sessions in class.  Please could we have reading records in school to be checked on Tuesday and Friday mornings.

Homework will be issued this Wednesday and is due in on the following Monday.

Please contact me if you have any queries using the class email address:chestnut@st-barnabas.kent.sch.uk

Have a lovely week!

Best wishes,

Mrs Barter
