Term 1 Week 4

Here is an overview of your learning in Chestnut Class this week.

Term 1 Week 4 - overview

Ukulele lessons will continue with Mr Lawrence on Monday morning.

Spelling and grammar - We will be working on spelling the homophones faire/fare, ball/bawl, main/mane.   In grammar sessions, we will look at correctly punctuating speech.

We are beginning work this week on writing linked to the text ‘Escape from Pompeii’ by Christina Balit.  Over the rest of the term we will be exploring different aspects of the text, culminating in us writing our own historically set volcano escape story.  This week we will begin by getting into character and thinking of about what Tranio and Livia could feel, see and hear as Vesuvius erupted.

We will be continuing our whole class guided reading of The Magic Finger.  We will read the fourth section over several times together and discuss narrative and language features before completing some questions on what we have read and understood.  We mark our work as a whole class to give children a chance to talk through their answers and learn how to create a ‘model’ response to a particular question type.

In Maths, we continue to work on place value.  We will be adding or subtracting 1, 10 and 100, finding 1 000 more or less and comparing numbers.  We will be working on our times tables fluency in a dedicated session using Purple Mash and Hit the Button as a platform.

In RE we will explore the text of Genesis 1 thinking about how we can look after creation.

Science children will continue their hands on work by creating circuits that light bulbs or activate buzzers.

In our art session we will be finishing our studies of still life pieces by Giorgio Morandi.  They have begun these really well and I am impressed with their attention to perspective, shadow and subtle colour use.  We will be setting up our own still life settings to see whether we can work in Morandi’s style.

PE is on Monday afternoon with Mr Luckhurst.

Reading records have been sent home with most children choosing a book from the selection in class.  All children have an additional book in their tray for reading sessions in class.  Please could we have reading records in school to be checked on a Wednesday morning.

Homework will be issued this Thursday and is due in on the following Monday.
