Term 1 Week 3

Here is an outline of your learning for term 1 week 3

Term 1  Week 3 - overview

I am looking forward to seeing anyone who is able to attend the ‘meet the teacher’ event after school on Thursday.  It will be a nice opportunity to get to know each other and have a look at Chestnut classroom and the work the children have been doing so far!

We will have our second ukulele lesson this week.  The children were so enthusiastic and listened so well to Mr Lawrence.  I was very impressed!

Spelling and grammar - We will be revising spellings from the year 3 and 4 and also working on the possessive apostrophe for singular nouns.    In grammar sessions, we will look at expanding sentences using prepositions..

This week we will be finishing our work on the book Quest.  Last week we planned our poems linking colours to senses.  We had 1:1 poetry conferences to discuss our work and how we could edit and improve it.  Children will be writing their final version and then creating a display of their work for our stairway displays.  We will then be moving on to English work based on the book Escape from Pompeii.  This links to our Roman topic.  We will begin by working on sensory descriptions.

We will be continuing our whole class guided reading of The Magic Finger.  We will read the third section over several times together and discuss narrative and language features before completing some questions on what we have read and understood.  I am very impressed with the confidence with which the children have been reading aloud and their expression with speech and italics.

In Maths, we continue to work on place value.  This week we will be counting in 1000s, working with 1000s, 100s, 10s and 1s.  We will also be thinking about different ways to partition numbers by making exchanges across the place value columns.  We will continue working on our times tables fluency in a dedicated session using Purple Mash and Hit the Button as a platform.

In RE we will revisit the text of Genesis 1 and consider what instructions it gives to Christians about caring for creation.

Science will focus on learning about the components of a simple circuit.

In topic sessions we will consider the concepts of invasion and settlement in terms of the Roman Empire.  We will be thinking about the timeline of the Roman occupation of Britain and place it on a timeline for context.

PE is on Monday afternoon with Mr Luckhurst.

Reading records have been sent home with most children choosing a book from the selection in class.  All children have an additional book in their tray for reading sessions in class.  Please could we have reading records in school to be checked on a Wednesday morning.  A reminder that we would like children to read daily.

Homework will be issued this Thursday and is due in on the following Monday.

Please contact me if you have any queries using the class email address:
