Term 4 Week 3

What we are learning in Lilac Class for the week beginning 10.3.25

What we are doing this week in Lilac Class for the week beginning 10.3.25

For Maths this week in Lilac Class, we are recognising thousandths as fractions and decimals using partitioning and by exchanging place value decimal counters.  We will also be ordering and comparing decimals with up to 3 decimal places.  We will be learning that 0.41 has more tenths than 0.365 and that it does not matter that 0.41 has fewer decimal places, it still has the greater value.

In English this week in Lilac Class, we are levelling up our Poems from the Workhouse.  We will be checking that we have used examples of the features of poetry writing, such as onomatopoeia, alliteration, personification, expanded noun phrases, similes and metaphors,  reading and analysing poems about the Victorian workhouse. What features of poetry writing have been used and why are they effective?

For Whole Class Guided Reading Lilac Class are reading Chapters 15 and 16 of Berlie Doherty’s Street Child entitled ‘Josh’ and ‘Boy in Pain’. We are finding evidence in the text that tells us whether Grimy Nick likes Jim and why we think Jim wished he had a brother and how he felt when the dog was given a bone.  We are also predicting why the next chapter is entitled ‘The Monster Weeps’ thinking about whom the monster might be and why they might be crying.

For RE in Lilac Class, we will continue examining the events leading up to Jesus’s resurrection in the Gospels.  We will be discussing the events that we felt were most important to us and annotating texts. For Time and Place, Lilac Class are examining photographs of Victorian children from different backgrounds and social class.  Using these primary sources, Lilac Class are finding out what they tell us about their lives.

For Science in Lilac Class, we are finishing off writing up our investigation about the conditions that cause more solid to dissolve.  Our questions we are exploring are ‘How does the temperature of the water affect the amount of solid that dissolves in water?’ and ‘How does stirring the water affect the amount of solid that dissolves in water?’ In ICT, we are outlining how you can answer questions by grouping and then sorting data.  We will be grouping information using a database.

This term, the Modern Foreign Language (MFL) we are learning is Spanish. This week we will be learning some basic Spanish phrases, for example, Hello, Please, Thank you, Goodbye, See you later! Good morning, My name is… Where do you come from?

For Design and the Arts this week, we are printing our wallpaper using our printing blocks. We are basing these on our own designs inspired by William Morris.  In Music, we are learning to sing ‘Food, Glorious Food’ from the Musical Oliver!
