Term 6 Week 3

What we are learning in Lilac Class for the week beginning 17.6.24
What we are doing this week in Lilac Class for the week beginning 17.6.24
For Maths in Lilac Class, we will be identifying lines of symmetry in a 2D shape and investigating how a mirror helps you to find a line of symmetry. We will then identify a reflection in a horizontal and vertical line. We are finding out how a reflection is different from a translation. We will then move onto our new unit entitled 'Decimals' using known facts to add and subtract decimals within 1. This will lead us to finding complements to 1 for numbers up to 3 decimal places. The questions we will be finding the answers to are: what number bonds can you see to help you? What is the same, and what is different about finding complements to 10/100/1,000 and complements to 1?
In English this week in Lilac Class, we are levelling up and editing our dual narrative writing based on our supplementary text Ice Trap! Shackleton’s Incredible Expedition by Meredith Hooper. We are considering the question ‘What should Shackleton and his men do now that the ship is sinking?’ We will be drawing on our role-play work when writing about the point of view of the men and then the point of view of Ernest Shackleton, their leader. Why are the men anxious and worried, and why do they believe in their leader? What is going on in Ernest Shackleton’s mind at this point? Does he believe he can succeed and save his men?
For our Guided Reading text, Shackleton’s Journey by William Grill this week, we are reading pages 49-54. Lilac Class are again looking carefully at the illustrations when considering why the boat is so small on the double page picture and why a map of South Georgia was provided. Our summarising task is to compare the differences between the two parties’ current situations in less than forty words.
For RE in Lilac Class, we are studying Zakah and why it is important to Muslims. Lilac Class will be thinking about who is generous to them, and how can being generous make a difference. For Time and Place in Lilac Class, we are exploring the mountain ranges in India and finding out where they are situated on a map. We will be finding out how different types of mountains are formed and facts about different mountain ranges. For Science in Lilac Class, we are continuing with our learning about the process of reproduction in humans and comparing this with other mammals. For Design and the Arts, we are planning seascapes using a range of different materials to create a variety of effects and textures. We will be listening to Arnold Bax’s Symphonic Poem ‘Tintagel’ for inspiration and examining the mixed media design ‘Colourful Fish Swirl’ by the artist Nikki B who lives in Tintagel in Cornwall. In ICT we are explaining how selection is used in computer programs.
We will also be growing beans and part of a geranium plant (artificial reproduction) in our classroom and observing what happens over the next few weeks! In addition, Lilac Class will be busy completing assessments this week.
