Home Learning Plans

Oak Class

Week Beginning: Monday 29th June

Hello there, Oak Class!

I would really like you to finish your art projects by this week – let me know if you need any help with getting them to me or resources.

If you would like to listen to me reading Wonder this week, tune into Google Meet on Tuesday and Thursday at 9:20 am. Please email the Oak email address for the link

Because the vote was SO close, we have decided to do ‘Once I was in Year One’ and ‘High Hopes’ as our leavers’ songs. Links to both of them, and the dance, are below:

Once I was in Year One: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IPXIgEAGe4U

High Hopes: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IPXIgEAGe4U

Dance Monkey: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q0hyYWKXF0Q

Song lyrics are included in this week’s pack J

If you are ready to send any videos of dance moves to me or have any questions, my email address is: oak@st-barnabas.kent.sch.uk

Sending lots of love to you all!

Miss Mercer

Monday:

  • Maths: This week we are revising measurement of area, perimeter and volume. Today we are looking at the area and perimeter of rectilinear shapes. Watch the video at https://youtu.be/9-83C-TH7qk, then have a go at the questions on the sheet.
  • English: Start off by completing the ‘was or were’ activity, then move onto the persuasive writing. Read the statement by actor, Ewan McGregor, then discuss whether you agree or disagree and your reasons.
  • Science: This week I have given you a couple of experiments to try at home. All the equipment is stuff you would most probably have at home or is easy to get hold of. Choose which one you would like to do or you could even do both. Write a short evaluation of your experiment telling me what happened, how well it went, what the experiment shows and what you would do differently next time.

Tuesday

  • Maths: Today we are revising area of a triangle. Watch the video at https://youtu.be/R6OZzlGepYw  if you need a reminder of the method, then complete the questions on the sheet. I’ll go over the starter questions too.
  • English: Start with the recognising subjunctive form activity then move onto guided reading. Class book: Wonder – read Letters, Emails, Facebook, Texts, Back from Winter Break, The War and Switching Tables (p114-125). Look up the meanings of the words ostracised and empathise, then answer the following questions. 1) How is Jack ostracised after the winter break? 2) How might being excluded by his peers help Jack Will empathise with August? 3) What do you think of Julian’s mum’s email to Mr Tushman? Do you think she has a good point? Do you think Mr Tushman responded well?
  • If you have arranged a Google Meet session, I will have emailed your time slot to you. Remember, the link is https://meet.google.com/lookup/c5t6bixsc4?authuser=0&hs=179  . For those of you that have not asked for a timeslot, use this time to continue your art work (see Thursday’s art lesson plan), practise the leavers’ song and rehearse a fifteen second dance/gymnastic/comedy performance to go with the dance track. Once these are ready, you can record them an email them to me at the address at the top of these plans.

Wednesday

  • Maths:  Today we are working on areas of parallelograms. Watch the video at https://youtu.be/o5qf1s9o1kk in case you need a reminder, then answer the questions on the sheet.
  • English: Today you have a creative writing challenge. I would like you to imagine you were the Prime Minister and identify three policies you would like to introduce and why. See if you can include some sentences that use the subjunctive form. There are examples at the bottom of the sheet.
  • PE: I have given you another activity to try out from the ‘Get Set’ website. The worksheet contain all the links you need and the good news is that you don’t need any special equipment! This week you are finding out more about Japan via an ‘active quiz’. Have fun!

Thursday

  • Maths:  Today we are moving onto volume. Watch the video at https://youtu.be/cwOfJVf82mI to get a reminder of what to do, then have a go at the questions on the sheet.
  • English: Start with the subjunctive form activity. Next, class book: Wonder – read Why I Didn’t Sit With August The First Day Of School, Sides, August’s House and The Boyfriend (p125-132). Answer the following questions: 1) Why do you think so many people are on ‘Julian’s side’ on the list? 2) Do you think August can trust Jack Will? 3) How do you think Jack Will feels when he sees all the stuff in August’s room?
  • Art: This week I would like you to add colour to your piece of artwork. Although you have only been allocated two colours, you can use any shades you like. If you are using pencil crayons, try blending white or a darker shade with your colours to create different shades. If you are using paints, experiment with mixing colours and try different techniques such as wet paint on wet paper and dry paint on dry paper etc – think back to our work with watercolours in class. Mrs Duncombe is going to have these pieces of art printed onto boards for us and they will be making a permanent display in the hallway. These will take time to be sent to us so the sooner you can get your artwork to us, the better. For those of you that had paper delivered – you could send it back to us if you cannot get into school to drop it off. If anyone has any issues. Please contact me and I will try to arrange for it to be picked up. Refer back to the example sheet if you are still unsure. I have attached a reminder of each person’s shape and colours at the end of the plans J

Friday

  • Maths: Maths investigation today! There are two different levels for you to try. The first asks you to make shapes with a perimeter of 12cm, the second asks for shapes with a perimeter of 16cm. See how many different variations you can come up with.
  • English: Today you have a script to read – you can even act it out with some other people if you would like! First answer the questions, then have a go at writing a scene between Tommy and Sandra after Mr Emmet has left.
  • RE: Today we are learning about Christians’ attitudes towards social justice. Go through the PowerPoint slides (if possible, download it and go through it as it has quite a few links that you can click on that give you more information) answer the questions on your worksheets when prompted. Social justice is an issue very much in the news at the moment and this lesson gives you the opportunity to make up your own mind about things. However, if you have any worries or questions, do talk to your parents or contact me at oak@st-barnabas.kent.sch.uk.
