The website MyOn is offering free access to its online e-books during the lockdown. https://readon.myon.co.uk/library/browse.html

The website is American, and many of the texts reflect American culture, but there may be texts children enjoy if they are struggling to find things to read at the moment.

Spelling

  • First, use the, Look Say Cover Write Check, resource.
  • Get a grown up to read the dictation answer sheet while you try and fill in the blank words on the dictation sheet. Don’t worry if you get any wrong, instead look at the answers and then have another go.
  • When you are feeling confident, logon to Purple Mash, there is a to do: Y3 SUM1 WK5-quiz.

Writing

  • To Tie in with Science week I would like you to research the life of a famous British scientist.
  • First, look at the sheet of famous British scientists. Do you recognise any of the pictures? Have you heard any of the names? You might have heard of them but not known that they were scientists.
  • Ask your family if they have heard of them. Can they tell you anything about them? Are they surprised by any of the names on the list?
  • Now, think about a scientist that you would like to find out about. They must have been born or lived in Britain but you can choose from the list I have given you or choose your own.
  • Try to find out these things about the scientist you have chosen. Try to look in several places to find your answers.
    • Where were they born?
    • When did they live?
    • Where did they live?
    • Do they have any connection to Kent?
    • What are they most famous for having discovered or invented?
    • Did they have any famous relatives?
    • Were they famous for anything else apart from science?
    • Is there an interesting story about their discovery or their lives?
    • Did they have to overcome any problems in their lives?
    • Does their work help us today with anything?
  • When you have found out about your scientist, write a fact file about them. A fact file about a person is called a ‘biography’. So give your work a title “A Biography of …” putting your scientists name in.
  • You can write on paper, type on a computer or make a PowerPoint. If you can include pictures that would be wonderful, but if you can’t don’t worry.
  • I would love to see you finished work. If your grown-ups can email it to me at maple@st-barnabas.kent.sch.uk I would be really pleased.
