Term 2 Week 1

This week's learning...

In Maths this week we are going to continue learning about addition.  We will start the week by recapping number bonds for numbers up to 10. We will then practise adding numbers together and adding more to a group. Next week we will be moving onto subtraction. If you want to know more about what we are covering, you can look for extra activities on the White Rose Maths website Year 1 Home Learning Week 7 (https://whiterosemaths.com/homelearning/year-1/week-7-number-addition-subtraction/).

In English we will be continuing to plan and write part of our adventure story about the magic red crayon. We will be thinking about how to write an exciting opening and how to sequence our story using time connectives (first, then, after that, finally). In Phonics we will be practising reading and writing words with the igh, ear, air and ure sounds in them.

This term we will be doing some whole class reading and our first book will be Blown Away by Rob Biddulph. It is a story about a blue penguin who takes an unexpected journey!

In Science this term, we will be learning about materials and their uses. This week we will be looking around the classroom at what materials objects are made from (plastic, metal, paper, wood) and then sorting them into groups. If you want to do a similar activity at home, please feel free and send a photograph to the class email address for us to see.

PE will continue to be on Wednesday afternoon and Thursday morning each week so please make sure your child brings in their PE kit to change into on those days.

Our RE topic this term will be based around the question “Why does Christmas matter to Christians?” This week we will be talking about the word Incarnation and how it links to Jesus’ birth.

Home Learning

To link with our maths learning, it would be fantastic if your child could practise finding number bonds for 10 (or another number if you wish).   This can be done by using objects at home. For example, find 10 small objects (buttons, beads, coins) and 2 plates. Pick up some of the objects and put them on one of the plates. Then take the rest of the objects and put them on the other plate. With your child count the objects on each plate. Then count the total. Talk about the number bond. For example, “There are seven on this plate and 3 on the other plate. Seven and three make ten.” Then try different numbers of objects on each plate and talk about different ways of making 10.

There is also a spelling 2Do on Purple Mash for the igh and ear sounds.  A copy of the words we are practising is attached to the bottom of this blog.

If you want to know more about anything we are learning about or have any questions,  please feel free to contact us via the class email address: willow@st-barnabas.kent.sch.uk.
